At Mission Roots, we not only believe in creating change within our school, but in our community as well. These competitions, challenges and mentions aren't only to promote Mission Roots, but also about spreading awareness on youth involvement in sustainability and inspiring others to get involved.

Mission Roots Cafe and the OKM Sustainability Club are also responsible for a variety of other environmental initiatives in our community. In October, we organized to bring a global program called Project Green Challenge to our school. Through this initiative, students complete daily sustainability-themed challenges throughout the month of October in order to win prizes, and in the process become educated on important issues and learn to ‘be the change’ in their community. We also applied and were accepted to screen Al Gore’s ‘The Inconvenient Sequel’, the first screening of this movie in Kelowna and one of only two educational centers in the Okanagan to receive this opportunity. The showing was accompanied by a live question and answer session with Al Gore himself, and was open to all of Kelowna. At the moment, we are working to establish more efficient recycling and composting systems within our school, and hope to bring this movement to a community level.
